David Beckham was one of the most expensive football players in the world. Then he started releasing cheap fragrances. So what is David Beckham Instinct like?
Every once in a while I’ll buy a cheap fragrance. I’ve been known to break the bank on some exclusive stuff, but I don’t mind a cheapy when it smells good. And I think David Beckham Instinct smells very good, just don’t expect others to smell it on you.
Funny story about this one. When my girlfriend first came over to my apartment when we started dating and she saw my closet with fragrances she was most impressed with this one. Not the Montales or L’Artisan Parfumeurs but this one, a David Beckham fragrance. Guess she didn’t know the other ones yet. She does now though.
Now David Beckham was a very expensive football player. This brand cachet hasn’t been translated to his fragrances which tend to be very cheap.
Something about celebrity perfumes. They tend to be cheap because they are not aimed at the normal audience for fragrances, but instead at fans of the celebrity so the buyers can share in the celebrity’s lifestyle. Most of the people who buy into this are younger and/or have a lower income and therefore the prices are lower. I don’t mind this, every audience deserves its own products. And they can act as a gateway into the fragrance market for people that didn’t consider buying a fragrance before.
The notes in David Beckham Instinct
David Beckham Instinct contains the notes Italian bergamot, orange, mandarin, star anise, cardamom, red pimento, Haitian vetiver, patchouli and white amber. The vetiver is very nice, and I would say that this is primarily a vetiver fragrance. But to me the star of the composition is the red pimento. It lends a nice peppery touch to the scent.
But remember that this is a cheap fragrance, I bought my 75ml bottle for under €20, so corners have been cut in producing it and lower quality ingredients have been used. The major downside of this cost-cutting is performance. While longevity isn’t bad it quickly becomes a skin scent. Another downside is the packaging, the bottle is nice and has a cool magnetic cap but the box is of low quality. In that sense you truly get what you pay for with David Beckham Instinct.
Final thoughts on David Beckham Instinct
All in all, I do think that this fragrance punches above its, admittedly low, weight. Money was saved at every corner of the production of this fragrance. Except on, crucially, the actual composition of it. I would recommend David Beckham Instinct if you’re on a budget or if you’re a fan of David Beckham. I don’t mind owning it and wear it every once in a while when I’m in the mood for a peppery vetiver fragrance because I think it smells really good. Just don’t expect other people to smell you after wearing it for thirty minutes.
