The original Acqua di Gio was released in 1996 and is one of the best selling fragrances of all time. Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio Absolu was released in 2018.
People take the things they grow up with with them as they grow older. Their tastes, their preferences, and so on. Rock’n’roll was rebellious music for the young when it first came out in the ’50s and ’60s. But now mainly the elderly listen to it. People like to hang on to their youth. The same goes for fragrances.
I don’t think the original Acqua di Gio is very popular amongst young people nowadays. Probably it is mostly bought by men in their forties who first bought it when they were in their teens and just stuck with it from there. So in order for the line to stay relevant and keep on selling Giorgi Armani has to release a new and updated version every once in a while. Hence the creation of Acqua di Gio Absolu. Which is a sweetened up and denser eau de parfum version of the original. Pitched somewhere between a blue fragrance and a clubbing fragrance.
Just like the original Acqua di Gio this flanker was created by Alberto Morillas, who seems to be behind every fragrance that is released nowadays. This guy is ridiculously productive.
Where to wear Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio Absolu
This fragrance features notes of bergamot, geranium, lavender, rosemary, patchouli, labdanum and tonka bean. Pretty standard stuff for modern male fragrances but very well done. It seems all the edges were smoothed out in the making of this fragrance. Acqua di Gio Absolu is very smooth, but there is also some depth there and it performs well.
So basically this is the kind of fragrance you can wear anywhere. That’s the blue fragrance part of it. You can wear it at the office, on a night on the town or on a date. I think it’s actually very well suited for dates, it’s very nice and completely unoffensive. The people around you will think you smell good, but they won’t ask you what it is to go out and buy it for themselves. This is the kind of scent that I regard as a useful tool in my fragrance collection.
Final thoughts on Acqua di Gio Absolu
It’s sweet and aquatic, but a little bit too dense for me to smell truly fresh. Acqua di Gio Absolu is a fragrance that will offend absolutely no one. But that’s kind of the thing right? If no one can hate it can anybody truly love it?
I like it and I’ll wear it, there are situations in life where you don’t want to offend anyone so a fragrance like this has its uses. My girlfriend really likes it though. She really likes it.
